While most Missoula fly fishing guides are wrapping up their seasons in Montana, redfish in Southern Louisiana are just starting to heat up. As Hurricane Milton swept across the Gulf, Louisiana benefited from a lingering low-pressure system that brought calm winds and bright sunshine, creating perfect conditions for hungry redfish and jacks feasting on shrimp.
As Andy and I poled across a bay, hoping to find a small school of redfish chasing shrimp, we were surprised to discover over 100 bull reds instead. When I lifted my push pole from the bottom, layers of massive bulls erupted to the surface just 10 feet from the boat. Andy made a quick cast and hooked up immediately. I joined in on the excitement with a double hookup from the poling tower. Andy even managed to pull a jack out of the school that really tested his endurance. On his last cast of the day, he landed another 40-inch bull on a popper. We cruised home on glassy waters, soaking in the day's adventures.
