Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring my own fishing equipment?

No, we provide all the necessary equipment for your fly fishing trip. Our guides come fully equipped with everything you’ll need, from rods and reels to flies and tippet. However, if you have a favorite rod and reel, feel free to bring it along.

What should I bring on my trip?

Be sure to bring polarized sunglasses, a rain jacket, and warm underlayers like a fleece or puffy jacket. From March to June, we recommend bringing waders for warmth, although we won’t be wading much. For colder days, knee-high insulated boots and rain bibs are ideal for adjusting layers. Our guides will have extra rain gear available if needed.

Do I need a fishing license for my Missoula guided fly fishing trip?

Yes, you will need a valid Montana fishing license. You can easily purchase one online at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website.

Do I need to tip my guide?

Yes, gratuity is not included in the cost of the trip. Tipping your guide is customary, and 20% of the trip price is considered the industry standard.

What kind of lunch do you provide?

From May through October, we provide a hearty sandwich, chips, and cookies. For gluten-free options, we offer a healthy salad and chips. On colder days in March and April, we serve grilled brats and hot soup to keep you warm on the river.

Do you keep fish on guided trips?

No, we practice catch-and-release fishing only. This helps preserve the fish populations and ensures future generations can enjoy the same great fishing.

Will you teach someone who has never fished or fly fished before?

Absolutely! We love introducing new anglers to the sport. Our guides take a patient, personable approach and are happy to teach anyone who’s never held a fly rod before. Expect a day filled with learning, and don't worry—we often have beginners who return year after year.

When is the best fishing season in Missoula, MT?

Our fishing season runs from March through October, and each month offers a unique experience. From early-season hatches in spring to prime summer fishing and late fall mayflies, there are plenty of opportunities for great fishing throughout the season.
